The basic formula
Lineal feet of baseboard = room perimeter − door openings + 10% waste.
That’s it. Measure the length of every wall the base will touch, subtract the width of each doorway and opening, then add 10% for cuts, miters, and mistakes.
Step by step
1. Measure the perimeter. For a rectangular room, add the four wall lengths. A 12 × 14 room is 12 + 14 + 12 + 14 = 52 feet.
2. Subtract openings. A standard interior door is about 3 feet with casing. Two doors in that room: 52 − 6 = 46 feet.
3. Add 10% waste. 46 × 1.10 ≈ 51 lineal feet. Round up to the stock length. Baseboard ships in 16-ft lengths, so order four sticks (64 ft) and you’ll have working room for outside corners and bad cuts.
Quick reference by room size
Assuming one door per room and 10% waste: a 10×10 bedroom needs about 41 ft (3 sticks), a 12×12 about 50 ft (4 sticks), a 12×14 living room about 54 ft (4 sticks), and a 15×18 open living area about 70 ft (5 sticks). A typical 3-bedroom Houston house lands between 550 and 750 lineal feet for a full trim-out.
Why order in 16-ft lengths

Don’t forget the shoe
